Kerala is located at the Malabar Coast of India, formed on 1stNovember 1956, combining erstwhile regions ofCochin, Malabar, SouthCanara and Travancore. It is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast,Tamil Nadu to the east and south & has nearly 600km of Arabian Seashoreline to the west. Vast majority of residents in Kerala are Malayalis, butthere are many smaller ethnic groups includingTuluvas, Tamilians, Kannadigasand Konkanis. In addition, large number of migrant workers from other states ofIndia reside in Kerala. Kerala is one of the most prominent touristdestinations in India with cocunut lined sandy beaches, backwaters, hillstations and tropical greenery as its major attractions because of which Keralais also known as "God's Own Country". Kerala has the highest literacyrate in India and ranks highest with respect to social development indices suchas elimination of poverty, primary education and healthcare.
